Woman world aminder dhaliwal6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Women’s creativity, sexuality, and fearlessness are unleashed by Dhaliwal’s end of days. This comic is defiantly a comedy, albeit a dark one. The mayor is naked, not as a feminist statement, but to feel “the cool breeze on my underboob.” The simple-but-exuberant line drawing, with characters posing dramatically with bold facial expressions, alternates in black, white, and grays with pages of warm pastels. ![]() Emiko, a young girl, worships Kevin James’s Paul Blart movies. ![]() But Dhaliwal’s snippets of story happen between and beyond those terrifying developments: romances, laughter, and family persist, as well as games of Boggle and love of Twinkies. Ruins litter the landscape, medical advances find no way to produce viable male embryos, and knowledge of a past with men slips steadily away. Men worldwide have died out after a mysterious dearth of male births, leaving only women and girls to carry the flame of civilization forward. The apocalypse wreaks its havoc gently in this comic chronicle of women’s fortitude. ![]()

![]() ![]() Your actions, too, bring these values to life every day. You never have to do what other people are doing or join something you know is not a good idea. And you do not have to feel pressured from other people around you. You do not have to be who other people want (or expect) you to be. But it can also be a test of your recognizing that you are who you are for many reasons. ![]() It is an exciting time, a new adventure, and it can be a wonderful test of your personal independence and growth. Going into college, especially going away to college, you suddenly find yourself (literally) in an entirely new world made up of entirely new people. Care about yourself, love yourself, be yourself. You are you and you couldn’t find someone who was made up of the same wonderful characteristics as you are even if you looked forever. I wish someone had reminded me of this more often. Here are those nuggets of sisterly advice, good for any student embroiled in the college search or already moved into the dorms. Before my younger brother left for college, I decided to put together a manifesto of my learned experiences to help him on his way. ![]() ![]() Sometimes the biggest thing a nervous new college student needs is caring advice from someone who's been there. ![]()

Ai ten visions for the future6/11/2023 ![]() One is that Lee, an advocate of AI and former executive at Apple, Google, and Microsoft, proves to be a lively and skilled popular science writer, while Chen (whose Waste Tide was reviewed here in April 2019) is among the most prominent of the younger generation of Chinese SF writers. (Most of us have that all figured out.) But there are a number of factors that make Kai-Fu Lee & Chen Qiufan’s AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future both enjoyable and enlightening. I’ve generally been skeptical of efforts to match up SF stories with ‘‘science fact’’ essays, partly because ‘‘science fact’’ has always seemed a redundant back-formation that no one would use at all, if it weren’t for the supposed need to remind us that science fiction is, well, fiction. ![]() AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future, Kai-Fu Lee & Chen Qiufan ( Currency 978-9-5, $30.00, 452pp, hc) September 2021. ![]()

1938 thornton wilder play6/11/2023 ![]() Rural NH in 1901 was idyllic-everyone knew their neighbors and often married the boy or girl next door milk was delivered by horse cart daily the constable’s only job was to occasionally roust a drunken workman WWI was not even on the horizon. The play continues to be moving and powerful in a very understated way. I was also moved to re-read the play because it was my only thespian experience having played Wally Webb (two lines in Act 2 and then a silent role in Act 3 in the graveyard after my appendix burst on a camping trip) in a high school production more than 70 years ago. ![]() The article also interviewed a number of actors who had played Emily Webb, ranging from a student production at the U of Washington in the 1950’s to more recent, modern treatments. I re-read this play after reading an article in the Sunday NYT that indicated that a new book about it was forthcoming. Almost everyone of a certain age has seen, read, or acted in Our Town, Thornton Wilder’s classic play about life and death in small town America, Grovers Corners, New Hampshire to be precise. ![]()
