Review the lincoln highway6/8/2023 Rules of Civility, set among social climbers in New York City in 1936, took its inspiration from F Scott Fitzgerald and its title from George Washington’s Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation. At 600 pages, it is heftier than its predecessors, but Towles’ epic tale of brotherly love and an all-American adventure was an incredibly riveting and unputdownable read from start to finish, leaving the reader with a sense of dismay once the last page has been turned.Īn investment banker whose writing career has been so successful he can now collect antiquities as a full-time gig, Towles’ mastery lies in his ability to create vivid settings, transporting the reader from their 21st-century armchairs right into the eras his books are set in. As a big fan of Amor Towles’ first two books, Rules of Civility and A Gentleman in Moscow, there was a certain bias in the approach to his third, The Lincoln Highway.

Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. The Hairy Maclary and Friends Little Library introduces the mischievous Hairy Maclary and his gang in a set of books that are perfect for little hands. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture.

Yet he’s beaten every obstacle life has thrown his way. Severely autistic, Morgan cannot look people in the eye, tell left from right, and has uncontrolled tics. When business turns in a direction Grant isn’t willing to follow he decides to retire and by all appearances he settles down in a nowhere town called Durstrand. The Headmistress by Milena McKay6/7/2023 This story includes quite a few fantastic secondary characters, and to them as well Craden’s narration adds even more substance. Then there’s Audrey, her youth, her naiveté, her pain, her love… The contrast is magnificent and poignant. The others too but Neve first and foremost. I was especially looking forward to hearing Craden voice her. With Neve Blackthorne, McKay wrote one of the most complex characters and Craden’s talent shines in the voice she lends her, giving life to all the layers the author bestowed on her. Her narration of A Whisper of Solace is exactly what I hope for in an audiobook: it takes a brilliant story and elevates it even higher. I do find certain books better suited to her style, however, and Milena McKay’s are definitely in this category. She’s not the only fabulous narrator but she’s obviously in my top 5. There’s a reason, many reasons actually, why so many authors of sapphic fiction want Abby Craden to narrate their books. I don’t see what I can add to my original review, not without saying too much, so I’ll focus on the narration. I’ve said and written my love for A Whisper of Solace so many times since it was released in April that I don’t think anyone who reads my reviews, even only occasionally, doesn’t already know about it. Edit: October 10th, 2022, audiobook review.ĭamn, this book… Seriously.

Firstly, in the innovation process, the boy fused pre-existing global knowledge, namely how it can be used to generate energy, with his implicit knowledge of local circumstances in Kasungu. William's innovation could be considered frugal for several reasons. Why is this windmill a Frugal Innovation? Since he lacks resources, he goes to the nearby garbage dump and uses a tractor fan, shock absorber, bicycle frame, and PVC pipe to build a windmill that generates enough energy to pump water from the ground for his family's cornfields. Driven by desperation William starts searching in books for a solution until he comes across the picture of a windmill. The film is based on the true story of a Malawian boy named William Kamkwamba from the Kasungu region who witnesses a terrible drought in 2001. In this blog an attempt is made to illustrate the concept of frugal innovation and its technological solution with an example from the movie The Boy who Harnessed the Wind. However, Frugal innovators aim to develop solutions to problems mostly in environments where certain resources are missing. But often, we find ourselves making things more complicated rather than make things simple, right? This is not only a challenge in daily life, more and more technologists and innovators are dealing with the challenge of simplicity. 'Less is more, less overthinking, less consumption'. Simplicity, a term that has gained a lot of attraction in recent years.

Behind her eyes novel book review6/7/2023 If the shifting alliances between Louise, Adele and David were the ultimate point of the show, I’d probably like “Behind Your Eyes” enough to recommend it. The show takes care to give Louise her own motivations and agency, which Brown brings to life so naturally that it’s genuinely painful to watch Louise throw everything she loves away for a dangerous thrill. The series standout is Brown, who’s particularly good at straddling the line between intrigued outsider and willing participant in the couple’s ongoing mind games. Hewson is terrifying in the role of a person on the edge of snapping at any given moment, a state of being that an increasingly sputtering Bateman has more trouble embodying.

Stephanie has spent much time in school, from the United States to Vienna to England she has learned about music and then writing. She is also a huge fan of Caroline Stevermer who happens to be the next featured author this month! They have two sons, who I am sure will grow up to be book addicts, who could avoid that fate being raised by these two? Stephanie has exquisite tastes in books, and one of her favorite by Austen is Northanger Abbey, which I also adore and view as her most underappreciated book. Stephanie shares her life with her husband Patrick Samphire, who is also a Middle Grade writer among other things. She lives in Wales, after some years in Yorkshire, surrounded by castles (even more jealous) and coffee shops, and one would hope a bookstore or twelve. Stephanie Burgis is one of those lucky Jane Austen lovers who has somehow managed to escape the United States (East Lansing, Michigan to be exact) and relocate to Great Britain, where she now has dual citizenship, I am so jealous.
